Transportation Department wants to punish airlines for overbooking
You know that airlines purposely sell too many seats on their flights, right? They do this to make up for no-shows, but what ends up happening is that people who have booked and actually show up are asked to forfeit their seats if too many travelers show up for the flight. The federal government is aware that more and more travelers are being bumped, and are considering raising the fees airlines are required to pay travelers when they get the bump. Sounds good to me. Of course, the airlines will fight this tooth and nail.
